Forward Adelante President Alex Urpí joined me on The I Love CVille Show powered by Greenberry’s Coffee at Barracks Road, the talented Dr. Scott Wagner of Scott Wagner Chiropractic and Sports Medicine, trusted real estate firm Roy Wheeler Realty Co. and Intrastate Inc., a four generation strong business that’s about to celebrate its 50-year anniversary in Central Virginia!!
(We had some connection issues with our ISP, but once you get beyond that, you will see one of the best interviews we have ever done.)
Here are some of the topics we covered:
(1). Who is Alex Urpi the person, the family man, the entrepreneur? What are his passions, interests and hobbies?
(2). What is Forward Adelante? What is its mission? How has it become the go-to resource and journal for the Latin community in Charlottesville and Central Virginia?
(3). Olga Morse launched Forward Adelante in 2008 in the midst of an economic recession. Why did she do this? What are the challenges she overcame? How did the Latin community respond to Forward Adelante?
(4). The Forward Adelante team picks a winner of the “Chuck Lewis Passion Award” every year? What is the “Chuck Lewis Passion Award?
(5). Alex is also an entrepreneur and the owner of a financial services firm. I asked us to put his firm, a family business, into perspective for us.
(6). Alex is a successful business owner. He understands that he is a leader in his community and eager and prepared to embrace this role. I asked him about the pressure and expectations he faces as a leader in the Latino CVille community.
(7). We discussed Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville and its efforts in the Southwood Trailer Park. Habitat is doing amazing things in Southwood. Alex helped put this into perspective for us.
(8). I asked Alex to spotlight some of the amazing Latino businesses in and around Charlottesville and Central Virginia, including Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant, El Puerto Mexican Restaurant, Fernando FerCuts Garay’s House Of Cuts Barber Studio and so many more!
(9). I asked Alex to highlight the Latino neighborhoods in and around Charlottesville, Va.
(10). We discussed City Council’s efforts to rebrand and rename statues, parks and streets in and around Charlottesville City limits. Alex offers very straight-forward analysis on this. He explained that the rebranding and removing of statues, streets and parks in CVille is not a high level priority for the Latino community.
(11). We discussed affordable housing in and around Charlottesville. Alex contributed AMAZING PERSPECTIVE on this topic. He thinks one way we can solve this issue is through offering a more robust public transportation system with routes across Central Virginia, including Fluvanna County, Louisa County, Orange County, Greene County, etc. If the public transportation is more robust, then folks can live in the outer counties where the housing is more affordable. Alex really opened my mind to this topic!
