The goal at Fry’s Spring Station since day one has been to provide choices that are fresh, fun and approachable. They recently did a neighborhood survey and got some great feedback which has led them to providing a wider array of options than just pizza, panini and pasta. Fry’s Spring Station is also providing better value, a longer happy hour, more draft and bottled beer options and an updated cocktail, wine and dessert menu!

3. What Makes Fry’s Spring Station So Special?

Housed in a late 20s/early 30s service station, Fry’s Spring Station sports a unique design and a Spanish tile roof. It used to serve as the neighborhood gathering place, where kids would go after school to watch TV (it was the first place in the neighborhood to have one), do their homework and buy some penny candy. Grown-ups would come to have their cars serviced, get the latest scuttlebutt and – if you were in the inner circle – have a nip or a swig of the house-made hooch. It was the heart of the neighborhood!

4. Meet the Silly, Bearded Team Behind Fry’s Spring Station

Chef Ben Thompson (left) is a CIA graduate and Navy Veteran who was born in Sweden and raised in Colorado. He’s just as at home in a kitchen on a submarine as he is in a Michelin star kitchen in Napa! Ben is a firm believer in honest, approachable food being the fuel that makes the world go ’round and he makes rice and beans so good your Mama will slap YOU!

Chef Tommy Lasley (center) is also a CIA graduate, a classmate of Ben Thompson and an alumnus of Blue Hill. Tommy moved here from NC and has an alter ego named Vikram that is a retired semi-pro bowler. His favorite movie is Fried Green Tomatoes, he enjoys cultivating his beard, eats 16-hour days for lunch, hasn’t met a fire he doesn’t like and genuinely loves making those around him happy!

Not a Chef PK Kamath (right) is an avid consumer of food and cold drinks and has paid many a bar tab by washing dishes. He was such a terrible (but hospitable) server he would make huge tips because people felt sorry for him! PK was crazy enough to leave a 20-year career in commercial real estate to get into the restaurant business full-time in order to expand his horizons (and waistline).

Most importantly, all three love their families, friends and country and feel Charlottesville is truly their hometown!

10. The Secret Side Door

The old Men’s restroom door on the side of the building looks like an outdoor entry to the bathroom. Well, it used to be, but now it’s an entry directly into the bar area. Feel free to use it. There’s no password and nobody will look at you funny. If anything, they’ll assume you are one of the people that are in the know. Shhhhhhh. Don’t tell anyone. Not even Ben. He’s standing right beside it and he doesn’t even know!!!
