The development of the Emmet/Ivy corridor (14.5 acres) is important for the University of Virginia and Charlottesville’s future. When you study the development plans, the planned hotel (225-rooms) and conference center address critical needs in our community, especially the obvious need for a conference space. This conference center could host up to 500 people.

As a result of not having a conference center, our city is sacrificing the midweek revenue that accompanies conference centers, Fortune 500 retreats and the influx of hotel bookings, restaurant revenue and other auxiliary purchases that are associated with these conference centers.

Hotels in and around CVille routinely have vacant rooms early and mid week. A conference center will help solve this problem while also super-charging the slower days for many small businesses (restaurants and retail) around Charlottesville.

While I fear the City of Charlottesville may soon morph into the City of UVa, I welcome these specific development plans. They are backed by years of strategy, vision and certainly solve an inadequacy in our community.
