Did you know that Caring For Creatures is Central Virginia’s first no-kill animal sanctuary?! Yep, President Mary Birkholz launched Caring For Creatures in 1988 with a mission to provide a last resort for abandoned, neglected and abused animals across Virginia.
Mary Birkholz has always been an animal lover, but her heart holds a special place for those who have suffered neglect or abandonment as a result of careless and inappropriate choices by humans. The work she does at Caring For Creatures is truly a labor of love.
Caring For Creatures is dedicated to caring for homeless animals and enhancing the human-animal bond by providing a safe & healthy environment in which to rehabilitate and re-home abandoned, neglected, abused or otherwise homeless dogs and cats; creating a lifetime home, if necessary, for animals who are elderly, disabled and/or have a chronic condition requiring specialized care; and promoting programs and policies that will help stem the number of animals entering care facilities through education and awareness, promotion of spaying and neutering, and community involvement.
