The Corner, an iconic dining and shopping district adjacent to the University of Virginia, is about to welcome another chain business to its stomping grounds.
According to two sources, Raising Cane’s has signed a lease and will replace Sheetz on The Corner. Raising Cane’s plans to open in early to mid 2023, if permitting is approved.
Raising Cane’s has more than 600 locations across the United States, including one location on Route 29 in Charlottesville along the “Cock Block,” a corridor that features five fried chicken fast food restaurants within one mile of each other (Chick-fil-A, Zaxby’s, KFC, Popeye’s and Raising Canes).
The targeted location on The UVA Corner was previously home to locally-owned restaurants, including The Greenskeeper, Three, Eddy’s Tavern and Poe’s Public House. However, as rents have skyrocketed on The UVA Corner, locally-owned businesses have been pushed out of the district in favor of big box brands that can afford the overhead.
