1. Boordy Vineyards, Hydes, MD
Winegrowing, like most farming, stems from a love and respect for the land. In this case, a connection to the farm, Long Green, has been strengthened over many generations from days spent walking its hills and valleys, fishing its streams, planting and harvesting crops, and tending to livestock. A stubborn sense of place has been imprinted in the souls of the Deford family.
They planted the first vineyards at Long Green in 1965 and moved Boordy to the farm in 1980, dedicating themselves to producing good wines and extending their family’s hospitality to wine lovers. In keeping with an ethos of good stewardship they placed the farm in permanent preservation with the Maryland Environmental Trust. Growing and making wine is their life and pleasure, and has led to an abiding optimism that extends beyond the culture of wine, to the community and the world at large.
2. Virginia Wineworks, Charlottesville, VA
Founded in 2007, Virginia Wineworks produces the Virginia Wineworks brand, Virginia’s first bag-in-box wine, and Michael Shaps, complex wines crafted in an old world tradition, using natural yeast and spending a significant time in barrel prior to release. As a small winery, they focus on quality and small-batch production. They are a working winery nestled in the woods south of Charlottesville, and they are all devoted to the passion of winemaking.

4. Oliva Vineyards, Fort Edward, NY
Oliva Vineyards combines the owners’ passion for wine with their love of horse racing. Washington County’s most innovative winery is situated on a 150-acre thoroughbred horse farm, the only establishment in the area which combines these two pleasures.

James River Cellars is a family owned and operated winery offering award-winning wines and a refreshing change from the ordinary! The staff serves a tasting of wines from whites to delicious reds and dessert wines in a tranquil country setting. Enjoy a picnic on their beautifully landscaped patio or capture the view from the terrace. James Batterson, winemaker, creates all wines from Virginia grown grapes.
6. Holly Grove Vineyards, Franktown, VA
Holly Grove Vineyards is a family owned and operated farm Virginia winery located on Holly Grove Cove on the Bay Side of Virginia’s Eastern Shore in Franktown. Inspired by the natural beauty and resources there, they are committed to producing quality handcrafted wines using locally grown grapes. Capitalizing on the temperate climate moderated by the Atlantic Ocean breezes on this “land between two waters” they produce fine Virginia wine which express the natural terroir. They are continuing a tradition dating back centuries to the days when Native Americans worked the land to produce a host of fruitful agricultural products.
7. Chatham Vineyards, Machipongo, VA
The land at Chatham, which overlooks Church Creek, was patented in 1640. The Federal-period brick house, Chatham, was built in 1818 by Major Scarborough Pitts and named for William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham and friend of the American Revolution. The historic outbuildings, barns and two early 1900s homes on the property have been renovated in recent years. Chatham Farm has been a working farm for four centuries. The high-density, European-style vineyards contain 32,000 Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot vines.
8. Black Ankle Vineyards, Mt Airy, MD
At Black Ankle Vineyards they believe that a prime vineyard site marked by rolling hillsides and rocky soils, combined with meticulous care of the vines and land will yield grapes that make wines of depth, nuance and character.
