Riverside Tutoring, one of Christ Community Church’s outreach programs, is run by the Tutor Committee, consisting of Chuck and Ann Clark, Missy Martin, Donna Davis and Tom White. They seek to obey Jesus’ command to “love one another as I have loved you” by forming relationships with the students and their families in the Riverside Ave. community who desire tutoring support.
Tutors meet with students- from kindergarten through eighth grade- once per week, on a one-on-one basis. The kids are encouraged to bring their homework from school, so that the tutors can help them with any problems they may have. If a student forgets his or her homework, there is a ‘Tutor Closet’ containing an assortment of books and games to help kids with their reading and arithmetic skills.
The children are provided with snacks when they arrive; and every six weeks, the ‘Tutor Store’ is opened, where the kids can shop using tickets given for things like punctuality, good attitudes and behavior. There is also a ‘Cooking Club’ where middle school students can learn to develop life skills like cooking.
The leaders of the Riverside Tutoring program have established a friendship and partnership with Burnley-Moran Elementary School. The school has been very supportive of the tutoring program, and in turn Christ Community has supported the school’s annual Writing and Math Workshops at the church.
Needless to say, all of this- from the snacks to the items stocked in the ‘Tutor Store’- costs money that is mainly provided through financial donations. Anyone wishing to help out the Riverside Tutoring program should contact Tom White at firstname.lastname@example.org. Find out more about the tutoring program at the CCC website.
