Named For A Weathervane: Flying Fox Vineyard

by

Flying Fox Vineyard: open Fri-Sun 11am-5pm.

Nestled in the heart of Nelson County wine country, Flying Fox Vineyard is a small, family-run winery. After many years of growing grapes they recently made the leap and started producing their own wines.

You are invited to come by and taste their limited production wines including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Viognier. A winter fireplace and summer patio will encourage you to linger a while at Flying Fox as you “Explore Nelson Wine.”

The vineyard is six and a half acres, planted to red varieties. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc are trained to a Smart-Dyson trellis and the Petit Verdot is on VSP (vertically shoot positioned) trellis. They both love spending time working in the vineyard. It is peaceful, methodical work in a beautiful setting. Watching the vines come back to life in the spring, the trunks a little bigger and more gnarled each year, the rapid growth of the leaf canopy and finally ripening of the grapes and harvest, have come to define the year. Family members Jane and Jon Zieman have been enticed to join the viticulture community in Virginia and they now grow Viognier grapes at Ridge Run Vineyard in Stuart’s Draft.
