Truth In Veritas Winery

Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards: open Tue-Sat 11am-5pm.

Veritas Winery, a family business owned by Andrew and Patricia Hodson, opened for business in June 2002; with the help of their daughter Emily they have succeeded in consistently producing a range of complex and elegant wines. The idyllic setting is easy to find but hard to leave, located just off I-64 at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Veritas wines are all unique and of high quality, derived from vitis vinifera with the exception of one French hybrid. Their philosophy is to make wine with the classic, old-style principles of Viticulture and Vinification, at the same time using state of the art technology to capture varietal and regional character.

Winemaking is the domain of Andrew and daughter Emily, who are committed to capturing the varietal character of the grapes. After completing her Masters in Oenology at Virginia Tech, Emily joined the family venture full-time. Emily puts the quality of wine above everything – constantly working on characterizing the terroir of the vineyards.

Although their name derives from the Roman historian Pliny the Elder’s observation: “In Vino Veritas” ~ “In Wine There Is Truth,” they believe that the truth in their wine is in the grapes. With that as her credo, Patricia takes responsibility for the year-round cultivation and care of the vines. She carefully monitors the grapes throughout the growing season, and only the best fruit is selected for the crush.

So go and visit! You are invited to take part in the essence of Virginia. Visit the vineyard, see how the grapes are grown, how they make the wine, and, finally, sit back on the sun-drenched deck, and enjoy the vistas and wondrous beauty of the Blue Ridge while tasting the fruits of their labor – the fruit of Virginia – captured for you in their luscious wines.

At Charlottesville Love and Virginia Wine Life, we love to feature and enjoy all the fantastic Virginia wineries and vineyards. Let us know if you would like to be featured by emailing us at: And check out for a look at some great restaurants serving Virginia wines. Cheers!
